Tracking down the Baleful Shadow in Elden Ring is a mandatory milestone for players seeking to complete Ranni the Witch's storyline. This formidable invader closely mimics the combat style of Blaidd, wielding a heavy greatsword that inflicts severe damage. Finding and defeating this shadowy foe requires proper quest preparation and a clear understanding of subterranean navigation.
Unlocking Access Through Ranni's Questline
Before the Baleful Shadow will even appear in your world, you must advance Ranni's personal narrative past major bosses like Starscourge Radahn. After gaining access to Renna's Rise, take the waygate inside to transport directly into the Ainsel River Main region. Shortly after arriving, collect the Miniature Ranni doll located nearby in a stone coffin.
Resting at a local Site of Grace will grant you the option to speak with the doll. You must select this dialogue option three times until the doll finally responds and tasks you with eliminating the assassin. Skipping this crucial conversation prevents the red invader from spawning in its designated chamber.
Locating the Baleful Shadow in Ainsel River
Once the doll has given you the objective, journey through the ruins of Nokstella, Eternal City. Traverse down the path toward the Nokstella Waterfall Basin Site of Grace and ride the elevator down. Follow the cavernous corridor beyond this area as it leads toward the entrance of the Lake of Rot.
As you approach the misty archway right before the elevator down to the lake, the red phantom will materialize. The arena offers enough space to maneuver, but environmental hazards like nearby pests can complicate the encounter if not cleared earlier. Activating the Site of Grace just beyond the fight provides a quick path to return if you fall in battle.
Combat Strategies and Countering Destined Death
The Baleful Shadow utilizes aggressive melee strikes imbued with Destined Death, which reduces your maximum health upon impact. Maintaining a moderate distance forces the boss to commit to a slow, leaping attack that leaves its back vulnerable. Rolling forward under this leap creates an ideal window to land a backstab or a heavy charged attack.
For players struggling with direct confrontation, stealth and status ailments offer reliable alternatives. Sneaking behind the invader allows you to cast Poison Mist without drawing immediate aggression, slowly wearing down its health bar. Applying Frostbite or Scarlet Rot also severely limits the shadow's mobility and accelerates victory.
Key Rewards for Defeating the Shadow
Felling the Baleful Shadow yields crucial rewards needed to finalize Ranni's long journey. Upon defeat, the enemy drops the Discarded Palace Key along with a chunk of Runes. This key opens a locked chest located in the Grand Library of Raya Lucaria, right beside Rennala.
Inside that chest rests the Dark Moon Ring, an essential artifact used to unlock the seal deep within the Grand Cloister. With the shadow vanquished, you can freely proceed into the Lake of Rot to conclude the questline. Understanding these steps ensures a smooth path through one of the game's most intricate side adventures.
